The original versions of the cone were not supported at the edge.

You can see here that the original reed structure has been simplified to a single copper plated steel bar.  The bobbin cores consist of the usual stack of iron sheets banded on either side by connecting brass strips.  The whole being ground flat to enable very close adjustment of the poles to the vibrating reed.
